There is a consensus in the sector that a whole systems approach is needed to end persistent poverty in the UK.

At this conference, we will introduce you to a project that is currently testing such an approach in two deprived neighbourhoods in Edinburgh and Newcastle

In addition to presentations from the project’s key personnel and evaluators, the conference will also feature renowned guest speakers (to be announced soon) who have practical answers to frequently asked questions around systems change

Research has shown time and again that public service isn’t designed or managed for the real world. Toby Lowe believes there is a better way and it’s called Human Learning Systems. Public service can support human freedom and flourishing, by responding to the unique context of each and every person it supports and in so doing can create better outcomes for less money.

Workshop 2: Replicating the Lifting Neighbourhoods Together approach in England

Ancha Stoodley (Building Futures East) & Paul McColgan (Co-founder Community Renewal Trust)

Building Futures East, a Community Development Trust based in Newcastle, has been replicating the Community Renewal approach, supported by training and coaching.  This workshop presents her experience and learning with an opportunity to ask questions and seek advice. 
 
Workshop 3: Hyperlocal data informed innovation

Sue Shearman (Experian Marketing Services) & John Halliday (Community Renewal Trust)

Experian, a global information services company, has been working in partnership with Community Renewal Trust to provide hyperlocal data to target and assess the resources of a neighbourhood transformation team.  In this workshop, they will demonstrate how their data has informed the project as it develops 
 
Workshop 4: Community Engagement and the Listening Survey

Sheila Thomson (Regional Director for the East – Community Renewal Trust)

A taster of how the Community Renewal: Lifting Neighbourhoods Together approach to community engagement works.  The workshop includes a short example of a training session in our door-knocking methodology.

Gary Wallace (Public Health Specialist – Plymouth City Council)

Gary will discuss the implementation of the Human Learning Systems approaches in a number of settings and provide learning and examples from practice. He will focus on how to experiment and things that are helpful in encouraging innovation  

 
10:30 – 11:00: Initial learning from two years of Community Renewal: Lifting Neighbourhoods Together

Ian Wilson (Deputy Director – Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) Sheffield Hallam University) 

The session will begin by introducing what evaluation is and why it is important. Ian will set out key aspects of an evaluation framework and explain how CRESR has developed an evaluation framework for the Lifting Neighbourhoods Together programme, including the evaluation challenges that have needed to be taken into account.  Finally, he will draw out key aspects and learning to support those who are seeking to develop their own evaluations.

Following their presentation, Sheffield Hallam University will go into more detail about evaluation and learning methodologies. Includes a Q & A session. 

 
Workshop 4: Wider good practice in whole neighbourhood working: As a result of recent illness, Euan has had to pull out of the conference.

Based on experience using innovative approaches in Plymouth commissioning mental health services, Gary will provide an opportunity for questions and discussion following his presentation. Includes a Q & A session.
